GPS Tracking Unit Fitted in Shoes Help to Trace Lost Alzheimer Patients

Tracking Alzheimer’s patients who get lost has become a bit easier in the UK following the launch of new shoes that have an in-built tracking device.

Designed to give worried relatives and friends piece of mind, the shoes enable the person with Alzheimer's to be monitored remotely, giving them more freedom.

One of the most common concerns for families of an Alzheimer's sufferer is that the person often becomes lost after getting confused and disoriented.

The 250-pound shoes are fitted with a miniature GPS system - similar to those used in sat-nav systems found in cars - that allows its wearer's location to be accurately pinpointed, the Daily Mail reported.

Relatives are even able to set up a designated "safe" area so if the person strays beyond those boundaries, it would trigger an alert in the form of an email or text message.

Family members use an app downloaded to a smart phone or computer to find out the location of the missing person.

The GPS system is implanted in the heel of what appears to be a normal walking shoe.

The device, which cannot be seen or felt, contains a battery, SIM card (this is what tracks the wearer) and an integrated chip to help the device function.

The antenna and a USB connection to charge the shoes runs up the back heel of the shoe.

The shoes need charging roughly every two days, a process that takes roughly two hours.

The tracking device is a joint development between Los Angeles-based GTX Corp, who make miniature tracking devices, and Aetrex shoes.

Patrick Bertagna, chief executive of GTX Corp, said the mini GPS system was initially made for training shoes for long distance runners. But he said production was changed after tests showed the benefit to sufferers of the disease.

Tomato and Its Health Benefits

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), the “Love Apple” is a citrus fruit. They are sweet and juicy and healthy. Tomatoes are very versatile as they can be eaten as a salad, in a sandwich or as gravy for vegetables – not to forget “the all important sauce.”

Eating tomatoes is great because this fruit /vegetable (whatever you may call it) has plenty of health benefits. Tomatoes are non starchy, low calorie and play such an important role in American diet today, that it is impossible to believe that till the 1800’s they were considered toxic.

Health Benefits

Tomato contains amazing amounts of lycopene which is said to have anti oxidant properties. Studies have shown that tomato can reduce prostate cancer especially in synergy with broccoli. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggested that ‘the intake of tomatoes and tomato products is associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer. This benefit may be related to the antioxidant properties of lycopene, but other potential mechanisms and other beneficial tomato-based components instead of or combined with lycopene cannot be excluded’.

Another study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that when tomatoes are cooked with olive oil the body’s absorption of carotenoid phytochemicals including lycopene can increase.

Tomatoes are a rich source of potassium; a cup of tomato juice has 534mg of potassium and half a cup of tomato sauce has 454mg of potassium. Physiologically, potassium plays an important role in transmission of nerve signals, fluid balance in the body and many other important chemical reactions. Potassium is used to treat high blood pressure, insulin resistance, chronic fatigue syndrome, muscle weakness, and even bloating and intestinal disorders.

Dr. John Cook Bennett of the Institute of Aberdeen found that the yellow gel surrounding tomato seeds could prevent clotting so as to prevent strokes and heart disease. Nutrients like Niacin and folate reduce heart problems to a great extent.

Other health benefits include -

Tomatoes work against impotency and help increase the sperm count.

Tomatoes are powerful blood purifiers and clear up urinary tract infections.

They have anti oxidant properties as they are high sources of vitamin C and vitamin A. The Vitamin A especially wards off macular degeneration and improves eyesight.

A person who drinks 8 ounces of low sodium tomato juice a day, can prevent inflammatory diseases like osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s.

High in fiber they are freely used by weight watchers.

They are good for improving skin porosity and are widely used in the manufacture of skin care and beauty products.

 Backdrop:

Some people may be allergic to tomatoes; their body cannot absorb and digest them.

In some individuals eating tomatoes in salads can lead to itching, hives and breathing problems.

Lycopene intolerance can cause bloating of the stomach, pain and diarrhea.

For some, eating tomatoes in any form can result in heart burn and reflux.

When a person has a history of kidney stones, it would be wise to eat tomatoes in moderation as the high oxalate and calcium bind together and kidney stones are a result.

Those diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome will need to go slow on consuming tomatoes.Eaten in moderation, they will not be harmful in anyway. The nutritional benefits are many so there is no reason to avoid this simple, cost effective and widely available fruit /vegetable.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
General
The importance of intellectual property in India is well established at all levels- statutory, administrative and judicial. India ratified the agreement establishing the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This Agreement, inter-alia, contains an Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) which came into force from 1st January 1995. It lays down minimum standards for protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in member countries which are required to promote effective and adequate protection of intellectual property rights with a view to reducing distortions and impediments to international trade. The obligations under the TRIPS Agreement relate to provision of minimum standard of protection within the member countries legal systems and practices.
The Agreement provides for norms and standards in respect of following areas of intellectual property
  • Patents
  • Trade Marks
  • Copyrights
  • Geographical Indications
  • Industrial Designs
Patents
The basic obligation in the area of patents is that, invention in all branches of technology whether products or processes shall be patentable if they meet the three tests of being new involving an inventive step and being capable of industrial application. In addition to the general security exemption which applied to the entire TRIPS Agreement, specific exclusions are permissible from the scope of patentability of inventions, the prevention of whose commercial exploitation is necessary to protect public order or morality, human, animal, plant life or health or to avoid serious prejudice to the environment. Further, members may also exclude from patentability of diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical methods of the treatment of human and animals and plants and animal other than micro-organisms and essentially biological processes for the production of plants and animals. more...
The TRIPS Agreement provides for a minimum term of protection of 20 years counted from the date of filing.
India had already implemented its obligations under Articles 70.8 and 70.9 of TRIP Agreement.

Trade Marks
Trade marks have been defined as any sign, or any combination of signs capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings. Such distinguishing marks constitute protectable subject matter under the provisions of the TRIPS Agreement. The Agreement provides that initial registration and each renewal of registration shall be for a term of not less than 7 years and the registration shall be renewable indefinitely. Compulsory licensing of trade marks is not permitted.
Keeping in view the changes in trade and commercial practices, globalisation of trade, need for simplification and harmonisation of trade marks registration systems etc., a comprehensive review of the Trade and Merchandise Marks Act, 1958 was made and a Bill to repeal and replace the 1958 Act has since been passed by Parliament and notified in the Gazette on 30.12.1999. This Act not only makes Trade Marks Law, TRIPS compatibility but also harmonises it with international systems and practices. Work is underway to bring the law into force. more...

World Anaesthesia Day, OCT 16

World Anaesthesia Day 2012 date is October 16.
Anaesthesia is a gift of science. It is needed in every part of world. Earlier when surgery was done to the patient, there was no such drug or medicine being invented which can relieve the patient from pain during surgery. But now Anaesthesia has proved itself safer and newer drugs relieving the patient from pain. And therefore a day is dedicated in the whole world whose aim is to spread the awareness and benefits of anesthesia.

What is Anaesthesia?

It is a drug given to patient to make him sleep during surgery. When Anaesthesia is given to person his body reduces the sensation. When this drug is given on whole body then it is called general Anaesthesia. When it is given on an effected part it is called local Anaesthesia. The main goal of giving this Anaesthesia to patient is to avoid pain, stress and complications caused in surgery. In other words it is painless surgery.
There are different fields in which anaesthesia is given to patients:-

Dental Anaesthesia

It is really very painful when dentist pull out the tooth or does any other treatment. But after giving Anaesthesia they don’t feel pain at all and the whole procedure is completed successfully. This drug is injected in the gums of the mouth to make the affected area insensible.

Spinal Anaesthesia

It is given with very fine needle at lower part of body or in spinal cord. Mainly it is given at time of pregnancy labour pain. This lessens the labour pain and surgery is completed smoothly. Through this way patient choose the way of giving birth, pain free.

Eye Anaesthesia

As eye is very sensitive part of body this drug is given to patient on an effected part or any nerves of the eye to numb it. The patient will not able to bear the pain in eye that’s why this is given so that patient should not feel any problem during surgery.

Myths related to Anaesthesia

It is said that Anaesthesia leaves its side effects. Its causes back pain when injected in spinal cord. Patients believed that they got allergy because of Anaesthesia. They feel they have itching sensation on their dental nerves. In some cases patients found complaining that they have got swelling on their eye lid because of this drug.
The people are not at all aware about Anaesthesia therefore on Anaesthesia day many hospitals and medical centres place the polls and canopies to spread the information related to Anaesthesia and its benefits. When people come across this then automatically all the myths vanish out. In this day different management team come together for:-
  • Creating a cordial relationship with doctors, nurses and staff.
  • Providing the guidelines for proper testing.
  • Checking the quality of Anaesthesia and to assure it is safe.
  • Providing a live discussion with patients.
